There are a number of important traits employers should look for when interviewing candidates for a management position. According to The Management Center, the single most important characteristic to look for in a potential manager is results-driven determination, as managers must often make difficult decisions and address unexpected obstacles over the course of a project.

When it comes to management roles, results are not generally produced by managers themselves, but rather by the team the manager leads. When screening management candidates, employers should place added value on individuals with strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in regards to communicating from a place of authority with a diverse group of employees. For individuals with little to no management experience, employers can discuss how the candidate established and executed goals in previous positions, how they have resolved professional challenges, and what methods they have implemented while leading and motivating others.

Holding a bachelor’s degree in economics, Freshta Atta works at AppleOne Employment Services, where she identifies and attracts employment candidates for various job positions. As a recruiter, Freshta Atta guides the company’s clients through the job-hunting process by conducting pre-employment examinations and performing reference checks on potential employees.

Reference checks are an important part of a hiring process. As you progress in your career, it is important to keep a list of past colleagues and employers. List their names on a reference check document and include a brief description of their positions when you were still working with them.

Before listing a person as a reference, make sure you directly ask the person if you may use them. It is easy to gauge if a colleague or superior is willing to refer you by asking them through a phone call or in person. Also, briefly describe the position you are applying for so they will have an easier time talking to the recruiter once they are contacted.

You should not, of course, include any references on your resume, as doing so may distract the recruiter. Simply have the reference list ready in case you are asked for a copy.
